Flying Geese in African Industry

With a grant from the Centre for Economic Policy Research, through the Project on Private Enterprise Development in Low-Income Countries (PEDL) CARI is investigating Chinese and Asian investment in manufacturing in Africa, exploring the potential for catalytic engagement with African firms. We have completed a scoping study in Ethiopia’s leather sector, and have added a technology transfer module to the Ethiopian manufacturing sector annual survey. A research note, “Flying Geese in Ethiopia’s Leather Cluster? Understanding Asian/Chinese Impact,” PEDL Research Note-ERG project 106, was published in 2014. In 2014 and 2015, we conducted three additional scoping studies of Chinese investment in manufacturing, in Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania, and returned to Ethiopia for a second survey of the leather sector.
